My happy pilgrim leaving Santillana |
Well rested, we easily climbed up out of Santillana this morning into a mostly cloudy sky, with temperatures in the low 60's. It wasn't much of a climb, but we were going up. Today's walk immediately felt different, as the roads we were walking were very rural and quiet. We were still pounding the pavement, but we were not dodging many cars. Additionally, the scenery was far more pleasant, as rural villages replaced abandoned suburbs. The morning passed quickly as we made our way up and down small hills, simply enjoying the quiet of the countryside. We stopped in Cóbreces for lunch, and chatted with two young Polish guys who were a bit lost (this time we knew where we were). The rest of the day we simply followed the arrows and actually arrived where we intended to (it's a miracle). We enjoyed the fact that the temps never got much above 70, and for the most part cool sea breezes were there when we needed them. All in all, it was a very pleasant day. We have booked into the Posada Rural La Solana Montañesa, and have done all our after walking chores. We grabbed a quick bite to eat at a cafeteria in town, and are now sipping some vino tinto on our small deck. Robin is trying to find some lodging for us for tomorrow night, and I am basically doing nothing (I can be quite good at this, mind you). Off tomorrow for Colombres. We are now counting down the days to Sebrayo where we will make a left turn onto the Camino Primitivo. We should arrive in Sebrayo on Friday. For now, our boots are airing out, there is still some wine left, and the late afternoon light has made even the ordinary view from our deck simply more interesting (is that actually the light or the wine). Who cares...more tomorrow. Cheers from the Norte.

What a beautiful looking walk. I love the stone houses and walls, and the geraniums and other flowers. And those recurring views of the sea. Magnificent!
